Arapaho Wilderness Outfitters (AWO) is for sale, a wilderness guide service operating on a US Forest Service Special Use Permit near Grand Lake and Granby, Colorado. The business operates on land owned by the United States Forest Service and the acreage in this permit is not deeded land. The guide service has several camp locations, including a base camp near Monarch Lake on the east end of Lake Granby. The outfitter offers fully guided elk hunts, semi-guided hunts, and drop camps in the Indian Peaks Wilderness.
The business for sale operates in Colorado GMU 18 and Colorado GMU 28, with the main trailhead originating at the Monarch Lake trailhead. Access is by foot and by horseback into the wilderness, with trails going back towards the Continental Divide into the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Other access is by boat to Knight Ridge, which is on the north side of Lake Granby, which offers excellent late-season hunting. GMU's 18 and 28 are over-the-counter units, which means that hunters can buy tags up to the night before the hunt during second and third rifle season without having to enter the draw for tags.
The permit area for this guide service borders Rocky Mountain National Park to the north, and there is a very large elk herd that wanders out of the park. The guides at this business have spotted bulls in excess of 400 B&C and have bugled in bulls during archery & muzzleloader season that scored well in excess of 350. This is an excellent permit area for over-the-counter elk hunting for truly trophy elk.
There was a large wildfire in the summer of 2020 that burned up almost 200,000 acres of forest lands near Granby and Grand Lake, and buyers may wonder if this area was affected. It was not, and did not burn in the 2020 wildfires.
This business is offered with a set of camp equipment, saddles and packsaddles, and an excellent enclosed trailer to get started. Horses are available at additional cost. The US Forest Service Special Use Permit will be transferred at sale, allowing the new owner to operate in the wilderness.
